Dark, Flirty & Slightly Dangerous… Valentine’s Day Blind Beer Date!

Hi and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists!

Love is in the air… We’ve been set up on a Valentine’s blind date by Jolly Sailor Brewery in Selby, with whispers that our mystery match is “strong, dark, and Fruity” But let’s be honest we’ve all been catfished by a dodgy Tinder bio before… so what was this date really like?

We cracked open the paper like nervous first-daters and poured her gently into our Jolly Sailor glass. She arrived fashionably late, dark, velvety, and rocking a mocha-coloured head that screamed “I’ve got stories.” Safe to say… she cleans up very well.

took a sip and got absolutely ambushed by a full orchestra of flavours cherries, stone fruits, chocolate… the whole chaotic ensemble. Naturally, O had to have a look under the covers!

Well not we know who our date really is!…
What did we think of them?

Name: Admiral Cherry Stout (5.5% ABV)

  1. Brewery:  Jolly Sailor Brewery
  2. Aroma : Strong aroma of Chocolate, sweet stoned fruits and molasses.
  3. Appearance : Very dark, a little red around the edges, a slightly open mocha head when poured, it really was a cracking looking pint.
  4. Body :  Heavy to medium bodied, with a nice level of carbonation, smooth almost velvety with cracking head retention.
  5. Taste : Deep chocolate and traditional stout molasses tones upfront followed by a wash of sweet cherries and stoned fruits, that morphs to a lightly bitter finish, that becomes more prominent as you finish the pint.

This stout was definitely after John and Peter’s hearts; medium strength, classic style, and absolutely loaded with old-school charm.

The cherries did get a bit overly sweet toward the end (we’ve all met that date), but honestly… it was still well within my comfort zone. Safe to say… I will be pencilling in a second date.
