Hello my fellow beer lovers
Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimist. As you may have guessed, we are continuing our look into some of Bricknell Brewery’s top tipples. If you somehow missed our insightful interview with the head brewer you can check that out here.
Today’s review is brought to you by Peter, and he will be trying a beer style that can be thought of as an oxymoron, a Black IPA.
It may horrify some traditionalists, but it is a style popular in US craft ale that tends to overuse IPA in beer descriptions.
As we have discussed before, the Bricknell ales are thoughtfully named things associated with the Hull, its shipping heritage, and the area. Therefore the Zoroaster is no exception. The Zoroaster was a ship that was launched in Hull in 1818 and worked as an East Indiaman under licence from the East India Company until the crew mutinied and scuttled her in 1836.

Name : Zoroaster 1818
Brewery: Bricknell Brewery
Aroma : Smoke, roasted malts
Appearance : Jet black, even when held to the light, with a brown head
Body : Full-bodied with good head retention
Taste : Smokey, heavy roasted malts flavour with hints of coffee and dark chocolate
This is a deeply flavoured beer with a strong aftertaste. If you are going to have another beer after, then I would recommend a palate cleanser between especially if you are going to move on to something light. The hops are there but not with the intensity of a traditional IPA.
One to sip in front of a roaring fire as a winter warmer.
