Bricknell Brewery – Larkins Bitter (4.5% ABV)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimist, Today we are continuing to sample the beers produced in our home city Hull, by the microbrewer Bricknell Brewery. If you somehow missed our insightful interview with the head brewer you can check that out here.

Today we are checking out Bricknell’s Larkins Bitter, this review was produced by John following his visit with Peter to the Bricknell Brewery.

Larkin, Aka Phillip Larkin was a writer and poet from the Hull area who wrote under the pseudonym Brunette Coleman. In 1943, towards the end of his time as an undergraduate at St John’s College, Oxford, he wrote several works of fiction, verse, and critical commentary under that name, including homoerotic stories that parody the style of popular writers of contemporary girls’ school fiction.

  1. Name : Larkin’s Bitter
  2. Brewery: Bricknell Brewery
  3. Aroma : Chocolate & Malts
  4. Appearance : Dark Copper in colour with a decent tight head
  5. Body : Really good carbonation, but poor head retention
  6. Taste : Mellow chocolate biscuit flavour with a slightly wine like tinge.

This one lacked the punch of the others that we have had so far, it was far more subtle a brew, but still enjoyable. Being a lover of chocolate biscuits I wanted a little more bite in this one, but the wine-like tinge kept things interesting.

our overall rating: 3.6/ 5.0
