Bricknell Brewery – Paragon Porter (6.0% ABV)

Hello my fellow beer lovers

Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimist, Today we are beginning to sample the beers produced in our home city Hull, by the microbrewer Bricknell Brewery. If you somehow missed our insightful interview with the head brewer you can check that out here.

Today Peter is reviewing another of the brewery’s stable of porters, this time being Paragon Porter which is a coffee porter. As part of the brewing process, Coffee beans are added to the conditioning tank and left for 6-7 days.

In this case, the Paragon in the name refers to the railway station in Hull.

  1. Name : Paragon Porter
  2. Brewery: Bricknell Brewery
  3. Aroma : Strong ground coffee with hints of damson or preserved fruit
  4. Appearance : Jet black with a cream/brown head
  5. Body :  Medium bodied, well carbonated with good head retention
  6. Taste :  Dry, with a strong earthy coffee flavour and a little dark chocolate

This brew came rushing out of the bottle like champagne on a Grand Prix podium and I ended up with a huge head. This I will put down to poor handling on my part or the garage now being too cold. Despite this mishap, the head retention was excellent once it had settled down.

Another excellent dark beer from this small brewery.

our overall rating: 3.9/ 5.0
