Broughton Ales – Old Jock Scotch Ale (6.7% ABV)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

During our trip to Scotland John and I decided to pop into the local Asda to pick out some beers that are not readily available in our area. These were generally not bottle conditioned so some purist may disapprove but we selected what looked interesting.

I selected this because it is a traditional Scottish stye still brewed in Scotland unlike one of my old favourites McEwans Export which is now brewed in England.

  1. Name : Old Jock Scotch Ale
  2. Brewery: Broughton Brewery
  3. Aroma : Toffee and caramel
  4. Appearance : Dark Ruby in colour, with a thin white head
  5. Body :  Good body plenty of carbonation thin creamy head that did not last
  6. Taste : Roasted malts, sweet toffee/caramel and with hints of fruit. Strong aftertaste and the hops take a back seat. Impressively strong

This is a cracking example of a strong Scotch Ale, the sweetness was not over-powering, and it is clearly a potent brew. Good to see traditions being upheld and one I shall be on the lookout for in its cask conditioned form. This is just the beer for a cold winter’s night in front of a log fire.

Our overall rating: 3.8/ 5.0
