Hi there fellow beer lovers,
Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists, today we are kicking off our look at what Tartatus Beer’s have to offer. We are starting off with their purple IPA Qilin. If you missed out on our awesome interview with the folks at Tartarus, fear not you can check that out here. But, for now, we’re here for the beer!
(and to look at that bottle art, I mean come on it’s stunning!)
Qilin, or “Chinese Unicorn” is a mythical creature that is said to symbolize good luck and prosperity. So what better way to pay homage to this magnificent beast but to sit back, relax and have a great beer!

- Name: Qilin
- Brewery: Tartarus Beers
- Aroma : Deep herby/floral scent, with a hint of berrys and hop.
- Appearance : An unusual very hazy purple hue, with an off white head.
- Body : Medium bodied, well carbonated, with good head retention.
- Taste : Deep, fruity herbal tea like taste, with a more mellowed hop to finish.
Now this one is quite the complex tipple, it reminded me of some of the brews the guys at Pig love brew Co create, as this one certainly felt like it had an eccentric medicinal flare.
It turns out that Qilin holds a cheeky little ingredient, and it’s the one that gives it its unusual purple hue. In order to pay homage to the beast’s origins, the tiple contains the butterfly pea flower which is native to China and is used to make blue tea. However, the acidity of beer turns the pea flower purple.
Not only does it give the beer a purple color it also gives it an enjoyable unique taste. It is a long drink and is definitely one to be enjoyed slowly over a good book or an exceptionally strategic board game.
