Tartarus Beers – Witch, Gingerbread Double Porter (ABV 8.0%)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists, today we are continuing our whirlwind look at what Tartatus Beer’s have to offer. If you missed out on our awesome interview with the folks at Tartarus, fear not you can check that out here. But, for now, we’re here for the beer!
(and to look at that bottle art, I mean come on it’s stunning!)

I think we are all familiar with Witches, from the Salem Witch trials to the Wicked witch of the west, they plague our myths, legends and history and our nightmares!

This particular tipple however is modelled after the witch in the classic Brothers Grimm Tale, Hansel and Gretel. This is the third beer in a series, which was brewed with the same base beer. This bold Gingerbread Double Porter has been brewed with oats and lactose to give it a silky smooth body.

  1. Name: Witch, Gingerbread Double Porter
  2. Brewery: Tartarus Beers
  3. Aroma : Strong noted of warming spices, and mulled wine.
  4. Appearance : Very Dark, no head
  5. Body :  Heavy bodied, well carbonated, with a full mouthfeel.
  6. Taste :  Spicy ginger, which builds as you drink, it then pulls into a long spiced wine-like draw, making it both sweet and a little sour at the same time.

Wow, this one was spicy!, it says on the bottle that it is certainly sure to warm you up if your lost in the woods.. I will go one further, it will keep you warm whilst your sat in a beer garden in February that’s for sure!

It was very rich, very smooth, very warming and quite punchy up front. A little to spicy over an entire pint for me but the 330ML is just about right, definitely a winter warmer, or a Spring Thawer.
