Gweilo – Tropical Lager (4.2% ABV)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

Did I mention that Sam seems to have appointed me as the unofficial lager tester of the Hoptimists? Well, here is another one, a tropical lager this time from Gweilo a craft brewer from Hong Kong. The range of beers on offer are brewed by them in conjunction with Vocation in the far West of Yorkshire. Puts me in mind of an episode of Last of the Summer Wine when Electrical Entwistle (played by Bert Kwouk the well-known Chinese actor, from Warrington) is introduced as ‘from the land of eastern wisdom’ and he says, ‘aye Hull’.

As the can states, “you can take the Gweilo out of Hong Kong but you can’t take Hong Kong out of the gweilo.”

  1. Name : Tropical lager
  2. Brewery: Brewed for Gweilo International by Vocation Brewery in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire
  3. Hops : Dry hopped with ekuanot
  4. Grain : Not stated
  5. Aroma : Tropical fruits like pineapple and little citrusy lime sharpness
  6. Appearance : Bright straw colour, slightly hazy and brief whitish head
  7. Body :  Light bodied, well carbonated but with no head retention
  8. Taste : Crisp with hints of lime and a dryish finish

A crisp, pleasantly refreshing lager that benefits from dry hopping. If the remainder of the range are as good as this, we have got some decent beers ahead to review.

Our overall rating: 3.6/ 5.0
