Beavertown – Black Betty, Black IPA (7.4% ABV)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

Time to review another so-called Black IPA (IPAs must sell better) or perhaps better described as a Cascadian Dark or American Black Ale.

Another one with cool can art (black and purple with skeletons) and a name that will chime with drinkers of a certain vintage and leave them with a terrible ear worm. Black Betty being a hit for Ram Jam in 1977, though Black Betty has its roots in an African American work song. Ram Jam as a band was short lived and not connected to The Ram Jam band (named after the coaching in on the A1) who supported Geno Washington in the 1960s.

  1. Name : Black Betty
  2. Brewery: Beavertown
  3. Aroma : Slightly sweet, roasted malts
  4. Appearance : Black, fairly clear when held to the light, with a cream coloured head
  5. Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated with a little head retention
  6. Taste : Dry and quite rich with roasty flavours taking over the hops. Slightly bitter finish and aftertaste

Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-lam) is a very decent beer and certainly worthy of an encore or two. Musically though, I prefer …Oh Geno…

Our overall rating: 3.8/ 5.0
