Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing x 6°North – Whisky Barrel Aged Black Lager (2.8% ABV)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

As chief lager tester I get to sample this collaboration beer which according to the label “We’ve taken our traditional black lager and aged it in Scottish Whisky barrels to produce a smooth complex beer that has wonderful hints of coffee and chocolate and is beautifully crisp and unrecognisably 2.8%.” A bold claim but can it be backed up with the taste test?

  1. Name : Whisky Barrel Aged Black Lager
  2. Brewery: SIWC, London
  3. Hops : Saaz and Tettnang
  4. Grain : Pilsen, Munich, Carafa Special III, Caramalt and Chocolate malts
  5. Aroma : Lightly roasted malt and some coffee
  6. Appearance : Black and seemingly clear with a brownish cream coloured head
  7. Body :  Thin, well carbonated but with poor head retention
  8. Taste : Hints of coffee, crisp but with a sour tang. Didn’t really detect the promised coffee

A meek and mild beer by strength but does deliver some interesting flavours. A good effort for the ABV but not really my kind of beer.

Our overall rating: 3.6/ 5.0
