Hi there fellow beer lovers,
Today we are taking a closer look at another another beer from our Beer52 experiment.
Brown ales seem to be a style presently out of favour with the only one seen regularly being the famous Newcastle Brown. It is a style I enjoy as an occasional beer to break up the bitters and IPAs I would normally choose.
Coffee and Friends is presumably a nod towards the hugely popular TV comedy of 20 years ago (which is now seen as not PC enough) without getting into a lawsuit. Is this a beer I would recommend to my friends?

- Name : Coffee Friends
- Brewery: Brewed by Great South Bay Brewery, Bay Shore, NY USA for Begyle Brewing in collaboration with Temperance Beer Co
- Hops : Not stated
- Grain : Malted barley
- Aroma : Sweet and malty but a surprising lack of coffee
- Appearance : Light tawny brown, slightly cloudy, poor head
- Body : Medium bodied with good carbonation
- Taste : There is coffee flavour there but it is subtle rather than intense. Malty and sweet rather than dry but with a bitter aftertaste
For me this is what I would look for in a craft beer, a clearly identifiable style but given a modern twist. This is a well-judged nut-brown ale enlivened with the merest hint of coffee rather than overpowered by it. Great start to the pack.
By the way I always preferred the original Vaux Double Maxim to Newcastle Brown.
Our overall rating: 3.9/ 5.0
