The Orkney Brewery – Dark Island Dark Ale (4.6% ABV)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

Regular readers will know that 2/3 of the team like to pop up to Scotland a couple of times a year to sample the pies and the local football. When it comes to beer the variety of real and craft beers available is improving but this is the beer we seek out on cask. I was a big fan of Youngers No.3 when it was available, but this is for my money the best traditional dark ale still brewed in Scotland.

This beer is not bottle conditioned.

  1. Name : Dark Island
  2. Brewery: The Orkney Brewery, Stromness, Orkney, Scotland
  3. Hops : Not specified
  4. Grain : Not specified
  5. Aroma : Roasted coffee with strong fruit notes
  6. Appearance : Very dark, almost black with a brown head
  7. Body :  Medium bodied, medium carbonated but with poor head retention
  8. Taste : Dried (Christmas) fruits, dark chocolate and roasted malts. Excellent bittersweet balance

The cask version is far superior, but as a non-bottle condition ale available in supermarkets this is a nice beer to settle down with in front of a cosy fire.

Our overall rating: 3.8/ 5.0
