Northern Monk- Aunt Bessies Jam Roly Poly. Jam & Custard Pale Ale (4.5% ABV)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

Welcome back to the eternal Hoptimists.

Today I am braving this creation from Northern Monk,. I don’t have a good track record with beers that have ‘custard’ in them, but I will grit my teeth and give it a go.

  1. Name: Aunt Bessies Jam Roly Poly
  2. Brewery: Northern Monk
  3. Aroma :  Sweet red fruits, with a strong vanilla background.
  4. Appearance : Thick opaque marmalade orange, with a thin head.
  5. Body :  Medium bodied, well carbonated, with no head retention.
  6. Taste :  Really sweet jam flavour with undertones of a lactose vanilla which morphs to a slightly sour finish.

This is a complex mouthful, as there is a lot going on. The sweetness is quite intense, before it moves through its flavour pallet. So much so, I couldn’t drink a lot of it.

I think this is one of those beers that can divide a crowd, if you have a sweet tooth and love sours and fruity smoothie IPA’s this is going to be a winner where as if your more of a traditional ale or stout drinker this one is a definite no.

Our overall rating: 3.3/ 5.0
