Beartown- Smores (5% ABV)

Smore, Smore, Smore, How do you like it?

Smores are a campfire treat consisting of toasted marshmallows and chocolate sandwiched between a wafer biscuit and are highly popular in America & Canada in particular. Beartown brewery from Congleton have picked up on the popularity and tried to replicate the flavours in a milk stout, but does it work

1. Name : Smores
2. Brewery: Beartown, Congleton
3. Hops :  Not specified
4. Grain :  Barley, Wheat & Oats
5. Aroma : Sweet marshmallow & dark chocolate with a touch of mocha and vanilla.
6. Appearance : Black/bordering on dark brown with hardly any head retention. Slight light bleeding through the glass giving more of an appearance of a dark mild.
7. Body : Medium body with the addition of lactose into the brew.
8. Taste : Initial hit of chocolate and marshmallow which leaves a strong sweetness on the pallet that somewhat dominates proceedings before making way to a slight bitter finish.

As you open the can the abundance of sweet aromas doesn’t so much as hit you, it more so slaps you full in the face, then returns for round two! This is not a bad thing as the aroma leads you into believing that you could be in for a real treat with this beer, however after the initial impressive first taste it soon fades away and by the end of the can you feel a touch underwhelmed rather than wanting (s)more. This is a shame as Beartown could have had a real cracker on their hands with this but it ultimately falls short of their excellent other dessert based milk stout, Crème Bearlee

I am certain that this beer will have a lot of fans as it’s a decent effort to replicate the flavour of a smore but personally it won’t live too long in the memory. Having said this I would love to try the cask version as I can imagine that this particular beer would translate well and probably be better suited when pulled through a beer engine.
