Eyam Brewery – Black Death, Vanilla Stout (7.0% ABV)

Hi there fellow beer lovers,

Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists.

Eyam AKA the Plague Village, have a brewery that doesn’t like to take itself too seriously. It has a number of tipples across a number of styles all of which have embraced the villages heritage as they definitely follow the same naming theme!

All of the beverages in bottle are bottled conditioned, but they do supply casks to a number of local pubs in the surrounding area.

  1. Name: Black Death
  2. Brewery: Eyam Brewery
  3. Aroma :  Hints of tar/liquorice and smokiness
  4. Appearance : Dark, with a thin mocha head when first poured
  5. Body :  Thin to Medium bodied, medium carbonated, poor head retention.
  6. Taste :  it’s an unusual one, it’s a tad Smokey, a little spiced with a mild liquorice and a light vanilla at the finish

I was a little let down by this one, it was a bit too thin, and it felt like a beer that didn’t quite reach its destination. For a vanilla stout, there wasn’t a lot of vanilla, and there isn’t a strong umpf behind it.

But it does have that Smokey tar that you associate with traditional stouts, and at 7.0% like its namesake it’s a creeper, as you don’t feel it but after two or three you might be in need of an apothecary.

Definitely not a bad Stout, but feel its marketed wrong as a vanilla stout, gives you a lovely warm sensation, one to enjoy by the fire with a ploughman’s or a good book or maybe both.

Our Jack ‘O Rating for this one is: 3.5/ 5.0
