Hi there fellow beer lovers,
Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists Spooktakular Halloween lead-up special, and the second Robinson beer of the day you can check out our first here!
For a few years now traditional brewer Robinsons have been working in collaboration with the heavy rock band Iron Maiden to produce a beer called Trooper. They have also been busy producing occasional limited-edition beers, of which this is the third.
The label, of course, pictures their mascot Eddie with a noose and dressed as some kind of insane monk. All very scary Halloween stuff. The beer itself is supposed to be Trooper given a Belgian twist.

- Name : Trooper Hallowed
- Brewery: Robinsons Brewery, Stockport, Greater Manchester
- Hops : ‘Noble hops’
- Grain : Malted barley, wheat and crystal rye
- Aroma : Some malt but with an astringent odour
- Appearance : Reddish-brown and clear but produced no real head
- Body : Medium bodied, medium carbonation with no head retention
- Taste : Starts quite malty with some fruit and is more sweet than bitter. The finish is slightly dry with hints of banana but with an odd chemical tang I associate with the canned beers of the 1970s and 80s
The label promised so much but for me just didn’t live up to its billing. The strength is promising as is the aim to brew a Belgian influenced beer. The Belgians seem capable of brewing a brown ale style beer packed with flavour and complexity. Hallowed, however, is strong but rather bland and falls into the ‘brown beer’ category of the past, perfectly drinkable but somewhat uninspiring. A shame because I believe there is the potential for a great beer in there, but it needs a tweak.
