Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
You know those occasions when you are shopping in a discount food store that sells a limited range of alcohol and something suddenly jumps out at you…..well this was one such occasion.
I will admit that I have never seen or heard of this Spanish session IPA before but the can art of friendly and cool looking pigs with the vivid pink colouring hit me first and it took a few moments to realise that this was in fact a beer and not some soft drink or alcopop. So I just had to pick up a couple of cans, but is it any good?

1. Name: Cerdos Voladores
2. Brewery: Barcelona Beer Company, Spain
3. Hops: Not specified
4. Grain: Barley & malt
5. Aroma: Malty traditional IPA aroma with a faint hop presence
6. Appearance: More amber in appearance with a 1-2 finger slightly off-white head
7. Body : Light to medium body with a decent mouthfeel
8. Taste : Malty initial taste which makes way to a lingering floral hop bitterness
I’ll openly admit that I do enjoy a more traditional style of IPA and it is something that we probably don’t see often enough anymore as the current market seems to be dominated with DIPA’s, New England or hazy hop forward IPA’s. So with this in mind I was quite impressed to find that Cerdos Voladores followed the more traditional path.
The initial appearance and malty aroma was quite appealing and as the first mouthful hit the pallet it maintained this pleasant appeal. This soon made way to a lingering floral hop bitterness that sent the beer off into a different direction and one that I’m not too sure works all that well as it gives the beer a sense of unbalance. This is not to say that it is unpleasant, more of an unwelcome distraction as the pallet struggles a little to adjusting to everything that is going on.
Overall I am glad that I had the opportunity to try Cerdos Voladores and I am sure that it will have it’s fans, but in all honesty I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to seek it out again.
Our overall rating: 3.0/ 5.0
