T|E|H Christmas Advent 2022 #14 – Pining for the Fjords (4.5% ABV)

Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimist’s,

When I was told that one of the beers that I was getting to review on the run up to Christmas was called ‘Pining for the Fjords’ my mind instantly turned back a few years to a beer that I had by the same name that tasted like a liquidised Christmas tree and was in all honesty a little strange.

Thankfully when my beers arrived this proved to be an entirely different beer from a different brewery, this time Brew York, and the beer in question is a completely different style in the form of an American pale brewed using Idaho 7 & Simcoe hops. Already sounds much more appealing but will it have me pining for more?

  1. Name : Pining for the Fjords
  2. Brewery: Brew York  (York, England)
  3. Hops : Idaho 7 (T90) & Simcoe (T90)
  4. Grain :  Barley, oats & wheat
  5. Aroma :  Appealing aroma with the hop combination providing a sweet, sticky tropical fruit nose
  6. Appearance :  Extremely hazy, straw coloured beer with a very inviting lingering one to two finger fluffy white head
  7. Body :  Light to medium body, extremely soft with a very nice lingering mouthfeel.
  8. Taste :  Lovely, soft, lingering tropical notes with hardly any hop bitterness. A very well balanced and easy drinking beer that is incredibly sessionable.

As you may be aware the name Pining for the Fjords comes from the iconic Dead Parrot scene as seen in the classic comedy series Monty Python’s Flying Circus and just like that sketch this beer had me grinning from ear to ear. Why, you may ask? Well, it is such a pleasant, easy drinking, flavoursome sessionable beer that with every mouthful it made me smile.

The beer looks fabulous in the glass, pouring a very hazy straw colour with a lingering fluffy white head. On the aroma you get a lovely tropical nose thanks to the wonderful hop combination which really shines in the taste leaving a lovely lingering tropical taste on the palate. The overall beer is incredibly soft and has a tremendous mouthfeel making you crave more. The only problem is, that I enjoyed each mouthful so much that the can was gone before I knew it and yes, I was pining for more!

Make no mistake, this is a very enjoyable beer and one that I would highly recommend, but take my advice, don’t order a can….order multiple! Good stuff from Brew York, this is a lovely beer indeed!!

Our Joint rating on this one is: 3.9/ 5.0
