Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimist’s,
As we are all aware Bruce Willis starts in the greatest Christmas movie ever made….Right? So, it seems only appropriate that in the run up to Christmas we take a look at another Brew York beer with a play on a celebrity name in the form of their gooseberry fool sour named Goose Willis.
Will this beer have me thinking that they need to ‘Try Hard’ to come up with something better or will it make me leap around the room shouting ‘Yipee-Ki-Yay?’ Either way I’m glad that I’m reviewing this one in the comfort of my own home and not at some office Christmas party.
So without further ado let’s get our ‘Hans’ on the can and ‘Let it flow, Let it Flow, Let it flow!’

1. Name : Goose Willis
2. Brewery: Brew York (York, England)
3. Hops : Nelson Sauvin
4. Grain : Barley, Wheat, Oats
5. Aroma : Nice and sharp inviting tarte gooseberry aroma
6. Appearance : Pours a hazy straw colour with a quickly dissipating one finger white head. Nice levels of carbonation as it hits the glass but as it calms only slow-moving bubbles are evident.
7. Body : Medium mouthfeel with good levels of carbonation and a very nice, creamy finish (thanks to the added lactose) that proves easily drinkable.
8. Taste : Initial lip smacking gooseberry tartness as it hits the palate however the cleverness is that the creamy taste and texture cuts through this leaving very nice lingering flavour that has you craving more.
‘Yipee-Ki-Yay indeed!!! This is one fine beer!’
First brewed in 2017 as a collaboration with Brewdog York you can easily see why this beer is still going strong over five years later and remains extremely popular amongst Brew York’s vast and extremely good portfolio.
The beer pours nice, has a very inviting aroma and a clever array of flavours as it is drunk. As the first mouthful hits the palate you think that this could be a pretty extreme sour with the powerful gooseberry tartness dominating but this soon mellows out to a delicious creamy finish that compliments the tartness very well indeed and makes this not only enjoyable but highly sessionable.
It would be fair to say that often beers that are designed to mimic desserts often flatter to deceive and sometimes have an almost artificial flavour profile but certainly not in this case. Brew York have done a fine job with this gooseberry fool sour so what are you waiting for, whether to drink at home, with friends or at an office Christmas party get on Brew York’s website and get your orders in now.
You would be a fool to miss this……Great stuff!
