Beer lovers everywhere must be aware of the annual barrel aged State of Mind beers released by Brew York, if not, why not?
Here at the Eternal Hoptimists we have managed to lay our hands on the latest version of Nightmare of Brew York which is a Heaven Hill bourbon barrel aged version of their 2021 beer aged for 12 months and promising flavours of peanut, pecan, maple and vanilla weighing in at a hefty 9.8%abv. That description alone has me almost salivating at the prospect of what is to come!

4. Grain : Barley, Oats, Wheat, Lactose, Honey, Vanilla, Cinnamon & Yeast
5. Aroma : An incredible aroma of peanut with a sweet backbone of the maple and vanilla
6. Appearance : Pours jet black, almost engine oil like with no head
7. Body : Lovely, rich, thick, luxurious body. Smooth as silk and slips down so easily
8. Taste : Peanut to the fore which is helped along with the lovely sweet maple and vanilla. Barrel aging comes into its own at the end of the mouthful leaving the palate alive with woody, rich and boozy notes.
As soon as the jet black, almost engine oil like liquid hit the glass the aroma was sensational with peanut being the dominant aroma but as you inhaled more, the sweetness of the maple and vanilla became more evident and made me want to take some time to appreciate everything that was going on before I took my first taste.
As I took my first taste, I soon appreciated just how the vast array of flavours combined so well, each became detectable the more you drink finishing with the barrel aging notes and a slightly sweet yet boozy end. Despite peanut seeming initially to want to dominate proceedings this never happed as everything about this beer just worked so well together creating such a beautifully balanced beer.
All I can say is what a fantastic job done by Brew York as this beer simply ticks every box. It will be interesting to see what they come up with for Christmas 2023 as it is going to be one Hell of a challenge to beat this one.
