In recent times there has been a spate of United Dutch Breweries beers appearing under different names in several of the bargain stores. The latest of these is the alcohol free (0.5%) IPA, interestingly named Nothing Comes From Nothing.
As this beer contains almost nothing in terms of alcohol and almost cost me nothing, should I be expecting nothing from it? Let’s take a look.
1. Name : Nothing Comes From Nothing IPA 0.5%
2. Brewery: United Dutch Breweries (Under the Craft Nation name)
3. Hops : Aurora & Comet
4. Grain : Barley, Malt & Yeast
5. Aroma : Gives off a malty, almost musty hop aroma that really is not appealing on the nose
6. Appearance : Slight haze with a one finger white head. Looks ok in the glass
7. Body : Surprisingly decent body for a 0.5% beer
8. Taste : Hop extract flavours are evident but still has the malty, musty hop flavours that in all honesty really are not pleasant.
I’ll admit that I liked the message on the reverse of the can that says ‘To celebrate diversity, we first need to accept that’s its here. So share a beer with someone out of your comfort zone and strike up a conversation! We find you might have more in common than you think’ This is all well and good but I can almost guarantee that the majority of people who bought this beer only saw this after their purchase and the vast majority probably only care about the contents of the can.
On that note, I can honestly say that the contents of the can are not that great! On the nose you instantly get a heavy malt hit with a mustiness from the hop extract (yes, not even hops!) kicking in. This spreads to the taste which I was hoping was going to be better than the nose but really isn’t!
I have to look for the positives in this and I have to say that the beer has a decent body and you can detect the hop extract but I am honestly struggling to find many more! I can see why this is a beer available for hardly nothing in terms of price and whilst it’s not the worst beer I’ve ever tasted I should warn readers that if you do buy one yourself, honestly expect nothing from it!
