Freedom Brewery – IPL India Pale Lager (4.0% ABV

Cricket fans I know what you are thinking, IPL Indian Premier League! Much as we love cricket at Hoptimist Towers (well we are Yorkshiremen) this is of course a beer blog, and this is a new hybrid beer that caught my eye.

The can states “an unholy alliance of beer styles that brings out the best of both worlds, the crisp refreshing flavours of a lager combined with the distinctive character of an IPA. Expressive, bright and balanced.”

  1. Name : Indian Pale Lager
  2. Brewery: Freedom Brewery Ltd, Staffordshire
  3. Hops : Centennial and Cascade
  4. Grain :  Malted barley
  5. Aroma : Floral hops
  6. Appearance : Pale straw, clear with a white head
  7. Body :  Medium bodied, well carbonated with some head retention
  8. Taste : Initially quite crisp with fruity notes but then bitter edge with dry finish

A perfectly decent easy drinking beer. The lager characteristics come through much more than that of the IPA and at only 4% it is lacking in oomph. My advice would be to ignore the label and drink it as a summer quencher which is does admirably.

Peter’s overall rating: 3.6/ 5.0
