Vocation Brewery – Pure Pilsner (4.5% ABV)

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

As chief lager tester at Hoptimist Towers I must keep an eye open for craft lagers in the shops as well as the more obvious stouts and IPAs. This can caught my eye, not sure if it was the simplistic design or that its brewed by the normally reliable Vocation Brewery and not the Illuminati as I thought at first glance. Certainly, worth closer inspection and a crafty midweek sample of a couple of cans.

  1. Name : Pure Pilsner
  2. Brewery: Vocation Brewery Ltd, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire
  3. Hops : Not specified, other than ‘European hops’
  4. Grain :  Pilsner malt
  5. Aroma : A subtle fruitiness and green hops
  6. Appearance : Straw coloured with a slight haze and a white head
  7. Body :  Medium bodied (good for a lager), medium carbonated with a little head retention (again decent for a canned lager)
  8. Taste : Initially crisp with a little maltiness and a touch of spice. Then the hops come through with the merest hint of bitterness in the finish. A well-balanced beer

A very pleasant pilsner which is not over gassy. Certainly one I would try again.
