Allendale – Golden Plover (4% ABV)

Hello and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

In the era of hop forward or hazy IPA’s there are times when a golden ale is just what is needed, so without further ado lets take a look at an award-winning golden ale from Allendale Brewery Co named Golden Plover.

Name : Golden Plover

2. Brewery: Allendale Brewery Co (Hexham, Northumberland)

3. Hops :  Columbus, Hallertau & Hersbruker

4. Grain :  Barley & Wheat

5. Aroma : Clean and crisp aroma with floral notes and a zesty edge

6. Appearance : Pours a slightly hazy light straw colour with a one finger fluffy white head and nice levels of carbonation with a constant stream of bubbles helping head retention

7. Body : Light body with an easy drinking mouthfeel

8. Taste :  Pretty much as the aroma suggests. This is an extremely clean, crisp tasting beer with slight floral notes and a pleasant zesty presence that lingers well on the palate

I have had several beers before from Allendale but this is the first that I have had from them in a can and I have to say the artwork is very easy on the eye with a variety of birds, bats, witches, leaves, musical instruments, rabbits, umbrellas, hat wearing dogs and a top hat wearing gentleman riding a bird, which I can only presume is a golden plover….perhaps I should consult Bill Oddie!

As the beer is poured it looks rather appealing in the glass, almost lager like thanks to the levels of carbonation present. In fact, if it wasn’t for the slight haze one could be led to believe that a lager was in their glass if it was put in front of them. When it comes to the aroma and taste this is where there will be no confusion as it has all the characteristics of a nice, sessionable golden ale.

I left this one to review for a Sunday afternoon and this is the perfect beer to enjoy at this time of day when the housework is done, and it is time to put your feet up watching the tv. I can also imagine this to be a great beer to sit out with on a sunny day, be it in a beer garden or even to enjoy a few cans sat in your own backyard.

I am sure that there will be people out there who will think Golden Plover is a little meh, but for me it is a good example of a golden ale style and will be one to keep an eye out for in the future. If I come across it again, I will certainly pick a few cans up for the summer months, or as I previously suggested for a lazy, chilled out Sunday.
