What does a Hoptimist do on a Saturday lunchtime in a small town in La Palma (Canary Islands) on route to a football match?
Go in the local Lidl of course! A mixture of curiosity and hunger compelled me see what beers were in store and what meat pies there were. This was one of a couple that caught my eye, the can design is modern and looks great. It also seems to be a collaboration brew between Mahou and Founders Brewing.

- Name : Session IPA
- Brewery: Mahou SA, Madrid, Spain
- Hops : Not specified
- Grain : Malted Barley
- Aroma : Light citrus
- Appearance : Golden and slightly hazy but head was very brief
- Body : Medium bodied, well carbonated but no head retention
- Taste : Starts with a good hop hit, fruity with some juiciness complementing any dryness. The finish is crisp, a little bitter and lingers on the palate
Of the big Spanish brewers I would tend to favour Estrella Galicia and Mahou who make decent lager. I wondered if they could produce decent craft beer and the simple answer is yes. This is a lovely well hopped session beer that slides down easily and makes a welcome respite from the mass-produced lager.
A very pleasant beer to enjoy in the sunshine and at 72c for a 330ml can a real bargain.
