Marble Beers Ltd – Earl Grey IPA (6.8% ABV)

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

This beer was originally produced in collaboration with Kees Bubberman (now Brouwerij Kees) and John de Vries (now of Brouwerij de Molen) so it has some pedigree.

Adding Earl Grey tea during fermentation initially seems a strange thing to do, but as it is oil of bergamot which gives it its distinctive flavour it is not much different to adding citrus peel. I’ve tried beers like this before so there is high hopes for this one.

  1. Name : Earl Grey IPA
  2. Brewery: Marble Beers Ltd, Manchester
  3. Hops : Not stated
  4. Grain : Malted barley and malted wheat
  5. Aroma : Light and florally fragrant like Earl Grey tea
  6. Appearance : Orange gold hued, hazy, poured rather flat and produced no head
  7. Body : Medium bodied, medium carbonated with no head retention
  8. Taste : Initially quite bitter, followed by the bergamot flavours. Finish surprisingly has quite a malty tang to it
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted

A pleasant enough beer with a bit of a potent kick to it. For me though the balance wasn’t quite right, the bergamot and the hops were battling out for supremacy leaving a muddled result. I would have preferred the Earl Grey toned down a little allowing the hops, which after all are the most expensive ingredient, space to develop their flavour. A good beer but not quite a great beer.
