Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
Two things immediately stand out with this can, firstly the terrible pun (we love those), secondly an imperial stout with rye. Let me at it.
As usual there’s some great label artwork along with a message. “In tribute to one of the strongest and most heroic characters on Stranger Things, we have collaborated with our great mates at Overtone Brewing Co to celebrate legendary actress Winona Ryder. With a huge bold malt bill, our Imperial Rye Stout is just as strong and bold as Joyce Byers and equally as dark and bitter as The Upside Down.” Hope that means something to you as I haven’t got a Scooby Doo.

- Grain : Malts – Pale, Biscuit, Chocolate, Carafa III, Mesquite Smoked, Crystal Rye and Rye Malt together with Roast Barley, flaked oats
- Aroma : Hints of dark dried fruits but mainly a spirit or fortified wine
- Appearance : Jet black with no light bleed and a dark brown head
- Body : Full bodied, medium carbonation and some head retention
- Taste : Very malty. Roasted malt to the fore with some bitterness and a very strong lingering finish.
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted, unpasteurised, unfiltered and vegan friendly
All that malt was worth it as this is an intense complex beer. There are layers of malt that can be picked out, some smoky, some chocolate and others with little sweetness. A brilliant beer with real potency and finish.
