T|E|H – On Tour – La Palma: Supermarkets & Bars

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists!

We are continuing our look at Peters Holiday Hooch Files, this time we are having a look at the Supermarkets & Bars

Take it way Peter!

What did the supermarkets have to offer? Amongst the usual suspects and a couple of German wheat beers for the Teutonic traveller, there was Canary Island brewed Dorada and Tropical widely available. A number also were stocking beers from Cerveceria Isla Verde the local craft brewer on La Palma, which were calling out to be tried. So, when I went to the football, I popped in the HiperDino Supermercado (where they are very competitively priced) to pick up a couple of bottles. These beers are bottle conditioned and after a hike and bus trip in my rucksack where not treated with the respect they deserved. I left them until the last day before sampling, but they hadn’t fully recovered and were a little bit hazy.

Indiana Wheat Ale 5.5% €1.65 330ml

Aroma: Light and floral
Appearance: Pale straw, no real head
Body: Medium bodied and carbonated
Taste: Light and fruity, citrussy with hints of botanicals

This is a Belgian-style easy drinking wheat beer. The website indicates it is brewed with locally grown wheat and added orange peel and coriander seeds. One I will drink again I am sure.

Peters Score: 3.7/ 5.0

Picara Golden Ale 5.5% €1.55 330ml

Appearance: Golden hued
Body: Medium bodied and carbonated
Taste: Fruit and malt, with a dry slightly bitter finish

Billed as a traditional blonde ale brewed with wheat malt to produce a foamy head. Alas the rough treatment probably scuppered that, but at least it gives me a reason to try it again.

Peters Score: 3.7/ 5.0
