Cold Town Beer – Pornstar Martini Ale (4.6% ABV)

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

I first came across Cold Town Beer in Edinburgh on one of our football trips with John. We were in a pub and there was a neon advertising sign but none of it on draft (apparently, they did have some cans though). So, after missing out I was keen to try it out when I spotted this can.

A beer based on a cocktail, here a pint of mild/bitter mixed is considered exotic, so this was going to be an odd one for me. My cocktail experience is rather limited (Bloody Mary, Whisky Sour, Old Fashioned) so I needed to google Pornstar Martini to discover that it is flavoured with passionfruit (listed along with vanilla in the ingredients on the can.) So, it’s going to be fruity and an interesting experience if nothing else.

  1. Name : Portstar Martini Ale
  2. Brewery: Cold Town Brewery, Edinburgh, Scotland
  3. Hops : Not specified
  4. Grain : Malted barley, malted oats and wheat
  5. Aroma : Fruity. Passionfruit, pineapple and a hint of cider
  6. Appearance : Light gold, clear with a brief white head
  7. Body : Medium body, medium carbon but with poor head retention
  8. Taste : Fruity start, then sweetness and vanilla before a dry finish. The aftertaste though is surprising as it’s a little sweet
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted

My first surprise was the appearance, I was expecting it to look like Sunny D, whereas it was identifiable as a beer. An interesting beer as well, one that pushes the boundaries of what is possible whilst remaining a beer and has plenty of flavour. I’m sure it will have its fans, so don’t let me put you off, but it wasn’t really my kind of thing. Certainly, worth trying, and I intend to try more from this brewery, but this is not one I will be rushing to find again.
