Saltaire Brewery -Zipwire (4.5% ABV)

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

It’s time to delve into another beer from Saltaire Brewery as part of our special’s week, this time in the form of a citrus pale ale named Zipwire which according to the can uses real orange and grapefruit. This sounds like it could be the perfect beer to enjoy a warmer day and without tempting fate the British weather seems to be changing for the better. What a great time to give this one a review!

1. Name : Zipwire

2. Brewery: Saltaire Brewery (Shipley)

3. Hops :  Not specified

4. Grain :  Barley & Wheat

5. Aroma : Nose is of delicate citrus fruits

6. Appearance : Pours a hazy light straw colour with a fluffy one finger white head

7. Body :  Light body which works well with this particular beer

8. Taste :  Strong citrus flavours really dominate proceedings. Pleasant initial taste that proved very refreshing but by the end of the can I felt that one was enough.

Zipwire, the name itself conjures images of going down quickly and this proves to be a very appropriate name for this beer as it is certainly one that will go down quickly as it is extremely refreshing. There is a but, and that is that personally I found the strong, natural citrus flavours to be far too dominant and this did throw the beer somewhat off balance for my own personal taste.

I started this review by eluding to the fact that Zipwire could prove to be a great beer for the warmer months and having tasted it I stick by my initial gut feeling. I can imagine that I would enjoy a can of this on a hot day whilst sitting in the garden, but one can would be more than enough.

It is a wise decision by Saltaire Brewery to package this in 330ml cans as 440ml could prove to be somewhat of a challenge whereas the occasional smaller can wouldn’t go amiss when I am looking for something to wake up the palate.

Overall, I quite enjoyed it and wouldn’t be against having it again, however in all honesty it probably wouldn’t be the first beer on my summer shopping list. Others, however, might seriously enjoy this beer.

Our overall rating: 3.1/ 5.0
