Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
A Stewart Brewing review can only mean one thing, this member of the team (the tightwad one) has been looking for value in his local Lidl.
It’s another dark beer, a standard strength stout, from a brewery well known for its pale beers. I sing the praises of this brewery for its value for money beers and love a nice stout so I had to get one. The Cocoa Nut was rather good, so will this one measure up?

- Name : Choc’ O’ Clock
- Brewery: Stewart Brewing, Loanhead, Edinburgh
- Hops : Not specified
- Grain : Malted barley and oats
- Aroma : Roasted malts, chocolate and hints of dried fruit perhaps prune
- Appearance : Black, with no real light bleed when held to a lamp, and a light brown head
- Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated but the head retention was disappointing considering the oats used in brewing
- Taste : Quite rich and smooth with a bittersweet chocolate flavour to the fore, but a surprising lack of smokiness and dry finish
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted, no other claims
A decent stout overall, strong flavours coming through, the mouthfeel is good for the ABV level, which at 4.5% means why stop at just one.
Like several their beers, it was a little lacking in depth and complexity to push it into great beer territory but a very good effort none-the-less. Another great tasting beer at a very reasonable price.
Peter overall rating: 3.8/ 5.0
