Vault City – Toasted Coconut Lemon Drizzle Doughnut Session Sour (4.1% ABV)

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

As the big coconut fan of the team, I made sure I snaffled this can. Judging by the description there is rather a lot going on, kind of a pastry session sour. As if that was not enough this beer has also been created to blend…

“Some beers doughnut belong together, but ours do. Consider this can half of a ‘hole’, and a whole lot of dough. Blend Toasted Coconut Lemon Drizzle together with Double Blueberry Vanilla Swirl, to create the ultimate doughnut duo.” Well top marks for the marketing and the bad puns, but today I will be sticking to just this can. The blend may come another time…

  1. Name : Toasted Coconut Lemon Drizzle Doughnut Session sour
  2. Brewery: Vault City Brewing, Edinburgh, Scotland
  3. Hops : Not specified
  4. Grain : Malted barley and oats
  5. Aroma : Initial burst of sharp acidic lemon makes way for a pastry or biscuity edge. Smells sweeter than sour
  6. Appearance : Lemony gold hue, rather hazy and produced a white head
  7. Body : Medium bodied, medium carbonation and some head retention
  8. Taste : Lemon upfront followed by a confectionery or pastry flavour as the coconut tempers some of the sourness. The aftertaste has a tartness that lingers long
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted

The ingredients listed include lemon, coconut and vanilla and these combine to produce a pleasingly complex beer. The balance is just about right, the coconut and vanilla play their part, but the lemon sourness is dominant flavour without becoming overpowering.

Billed as a session sour, the strength at 4.1% and it was a fine beer but it’s not one I would drink multiple cans of in one session. As part of a wider session yes if thought was given to the beers either side. This is a beer that would work well paired with food, in particular rich dishes or milder curries.
