Vault City – Cloudy Lemonade, Citra & Nelson Sauvin (4.2% ABV)

Hello and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

When it comes to beers from Vault City one can usually expect a somewhat bonkers, yet remarkably good array of flavours, however every now and again you come across something that seems safer but often proves equally as good as other beers in their portfolio.

In this review I will be looking at something that might be considered on the safer side in the form of their cloudy lemonade (Citra & Nelson Sauvin) session sour. To me, this sounds just as appealing as other Vault City brews so let’s get the beer in the glass and see what we think.

1. Name : Cloudy Lemonade

2. Brewery: Vault City, Edinburgh

3. Hops :  Citra & Nelson Sauvin

4. Grain :  Barley, oats & yeast

5. Aroma : Inviting sharp citrus aroma that replicates the smell of a cloudy lemonade well

6. Appearance : Pours a cloudy straw colour with a quickly dissipating one finger white head

7. Body : Light body with a refreshing mouthfeel

8. Taste :  Oooohhh, now this is sharp! Often the Vault City modern sours have more of a tartness with a fruity edge whereas this beer is brewed more in the traditional sour style with an incredibly zesty lemon flavour that leaves a lingering sourness on the palate. This works very well and proves to be a welcome change of direction from a lot of the Vault City beers that I have had of late.

9. Allergens: Contains gluten

Vault City Cloudy Lemonade (Citra & Nelson Sauvin) was a pleasant surprise to me as I was probably expecting the more smoothie style that I have become accustomed to of late where as this was brewed more of a traditional style……and it works!

There is no getting away from the fact that this beer will not appeal to everyone’s palate, but sour beer fans will no doubt jump for joy at what is in their glass as this beer replicates the flavours of a cloudy lemonade (albeit more sour) well and the Citra & Nelson Sauvin hops are a clever addition to bring out more of the flavours and add balance to proceedings.

Yes, I am a fan and yes, I would recommend this very flavoursome and refreshing beer from the modern sour kings at Vault City.
