Powder Monkey Brewing Co – Scuttlebutt, Munich Helles (4.5% ABV)

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

Regular readers of this blog will probably be aware that we are not big lager drinkers. It may not be our preferred pint, but that doesn’t mean that we are not partial to the occasional cold one in summer or on holiday. Today I am trying a Munich Helles style one, a style I prefer due to the heavier use of malts and more robust body.

  1. Name : Scuttlebutt
  2. Brewery: Powder Monkey Brewing co, Gosport, Hampshire
  3. Hops : All German hop profile including Huell Melon and Mandarina Bavaria
  4. Grain : Malted barley (Munich and Vienna), wheat and oats
  5. Aroma : Malty but with a lightly floral touch too
  6. Appearance : Golden, clear with a short lasting white head
  7. Body : Well bodied for a lager, medium with medium carbonation
  8. Taste : Heavy on the malt with a touch of sweetness rather than sharp. Hints of warm spice in the middle with a touch of sweetness in the long lingering aftertaste
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted

I certainly could get used to lager like this. Smooth on the palate with a spicy maltiness it is packed full of flavour and gives the impression of a beer with a higher ABV.

A beer that needs a good chilling.
