Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
Welcome back to our two week showcase of all things Powder Monkey!
Despite John’s super busy schedule now that he has retired, he took the time to review this breakfast stout, as we all know it “definitely not” his favourite style of beer (that’s sarcasm for all you new readers) so lets see if this one can stand up to his scrutiny!

- Name : Drunken Sailor, Breakfast Stout
- Brewery: Powder Monkey Brewing co, Gosport, Hampshire
- Hops : N/A
- Grain : Malted Barley (Gluten), Oats (Gluten), Wheat (Gluten)
- Aroma : Deep malt profile with a cheeky fruit backdrop.
- Appearance : Very dark, almost pitch with a slightly off white head when poured.
- Body : Medium to full bodied, a good level of carbonation, pretty smooth and reasonable head retention.
- Taste : A light and moreish malty flavour with hints of chocolate, fruit and a caramel sweetness, finishing with a flourish of coffee.
This one had quite the complex flavour profile, it was certainly a more modern stout, but it clearly has roots in the traditional. I admit this was a little on the sweet side for me, but please don’t let that put you off.
It is well worth having a go, and then another!
Peter’s overall rating: 3.6/ 5.0
