Powder Monkey Brewing Co – Monkey’s Charge, DDH Pale Ale (5.2% ABV)

Hello and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

I will admit that I am a bit of a sucker when it comes to American Pales as it is a style that I really enjoy. In addition, I always try to find new breweries, so when I found out that we were about to have a feature on Powder Monkey Brewing Co and that I was to be given their DDH Pale Ale named Monkey’s Charge, needless to say that I was excited by the prospect.

Here’s hoping that by the time that I have written the review I will be asking you to charge your glasses and raise a toast to Powder Monkey for a quality brew.

1. Name : Monkey’s Charge

2. Brewery: Powder Monkey Brewing Co. (Gosport)

3. Hops : Azacca & Amarillo

4. Grain :  Barley, oats and wheat

5. Aroma : Nose of soft peaches, mango and light tropical fruits. This has a delicate rather than punchy hop aroma that draws you in.

6. Appearance : Pours a hazy golden/light amber colour with a fluffy two finger white head

7. Body : Addition of oats in the brew gives this a nice medium body with a delightfully soft yet creamy mouthfeel

8. Taste : As with the aroma this has a delicate yet extremely flavoursome initial hit on the palate that makes way to a nice lingering bitterness on the finish. The double dry hopping works very well allowing all flavours of the Azacca & Amarillo hops to shine and create a highly sessionable and enjoyable brew.

9. Allergens: Contains Gluten

I was hoping when I received Monkey’s Charge that I would have a beer that I not only enjoyed but found extremely sessionable and it is fair to say that this delivered on both aspects. At 5.2% abv this is a very sessionable beer that I could enjoy again and again and one that I will certainly look out for in the future.

As I was drinking, I could not help but draw comparisons to a beer that I have always loved, North Brewing Co’s Lost Cosmonauts as this has a lot of similar characteristics of that particular beer. It would be unfair however to put each against one another as both are fine beers that I could (and would) happily drink again.

Hats of to Powder Monkey Brewing Co, as they have brewed a fine beer with Monkey’s Charge. Here’s hoping that more and more people get the opportunity to try this one as I am sure, like myself they will greatly enjoy the experience.
