Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
Here’s one for ‘brown beer’ enthusiasts, an amber ale, something that is almost becoming a rare commodity.
This one promises malt and toffee goodness and is part of a range from Steve Thompson who is a director of the brewery. Rugby fans will remember Steve as the England international hooker, part of the successful World Cup side and not the sort of man to take a backwards step.

- Name : Hop & Hooker Amber Ale
- Brewery: Powder Monkey Brewing Co, Gosport, Hampshire
- Hops : ‘UK hops’
- Grain : Malted barley (Crystal) and wheat
- Aroma : Sweet and malty but with some fruit breaking through
- Appearance : Darkish amber, slightly hazy with a white head
- Body : Full bodied, well carbonated and with some head retention
- Taste : Malty, with toffee fudge and a touch of pastry but not overly sweet. The finish is dry and lingering with a slight bitter edge
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted
A pleasant enough undemanding session beer. In a market packed with IPAs and complexity it is nice to occasionally have a straightforward beer. I could happily spend an evening drinking several of these with friends.
