Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
This beer is a twist on the brewery’s Northern Star beer and is an American style porter. Porter is one of the beer styles latched onto by the craft brewing scene at a time when it was out of favour in the UK.
Now I’m pleased to say there are many porters on the market. I’m certainly a fan of the style but some of the porters on the market can be a little bit disappointing.

- Name : Star & Anchor
- Brewery: Northern Monk, Holbeck, Leeds
- Hops : Columbus
- Grain : Malted barley and oats
- Aroma : Malt with hints of coffee and resin
- Appearance : Dark brown almost black with a brown head
- Body : Medium bodied, medium carbonated with fair head retention
- Taste : Malty up front with chocolate and hints of coffee and caramel. A slightly bitter finish with resinous aftertaste
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted
A little lightweight by modern Porter standards but perfectly fine, nonetheless. The low ABV makes this a good session porter and there is enough flavour to enjoy.
Nice and malty but not as roasted or smoky as some.
Peter’s overall rating: 3.5/ 5.0
