When I first bought my Phillips Perfect Draft machine more than one person told me that as soon as the Oktoberfest beers were available, I simply had to buy them. So, as soon as the announcement was made that they were on sale, they were added to my basket and 24 hours later arrived at my front door.
The first of these Oktoberfest beers to hit my machine is the highly regarded Lowenbrau Oktoberfestbier coming in at a very appealing 6.1% abv. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype!

1. Name : Lowenbrau Oktoberfestbier
2. Brewery: Spaten-Franziskaner-Lowenbrau-Gruppe (Munich, Germany)
3. Hops : Not Stated
4. Grain : Barley & Wheat
5. Aroma : Aroma is clean, crisp with a zesty and slight peppery hop aroma
6. Appearance : Pours golden amber with a two to three finger white head. Looks incredibly nice in the glass and even more so when poured into a stein.
7. Body : Lovely full bodied beer with a very creamy mouthfeel and little carbonation that helps this one to slip down.
8. Taste : Sweet malts to the fore with a clean, crisp, zesty flavour profile. This is an incredibly easy drinking Oktoberfest beer that proves to be very moreish.
When I was told to keep my eyes open for the Oktoberfest beers on the Perfect Draft I did wonder whether they would live up to the hype and it’s fair to say that the first of these that went into my machine (Lowenbrau Oktoberfestbier) certainly did not disappoint.
The beer is so easy drinking that you could easily sink a few pints then only realise afterwards that the strength is 6.1% abv once it hits you. Unlike the mainstream British lagers, these German beers are in a different league thanks in no small part to the purity laws (Reinheitsgebot) that ensure what is in your glass is pure quality.
Overall, I am glad that I jumped on to Lowenbrau Oktoberfestbier as soon as it was released as it is a quality brew. As with other beers on the Perfect Draft it transitions incredibly well to this format and comes highly recommended once it has its annual release. Now, I have the Spaten Oktoberfestbier to come next and if that one is as good as the Lowenbrau then I know that I will be in for a treat.
Our overall rating: 3.9/ 5.0
