Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptomists Spookoween 2023 special!
I’ll be honest in saying that beers that are brewed on a budget and sold at cheap prices in the discount stores are more often than not very forgettable. To be fair to Home Bargains the deal that they have struck with Glen Cannich brewery hasn’t proven too bad. Yes, there has been a fair few that are rather meh, but every now and then there is a little gem that appears.
As part of our Halloween specials I picked up a can of Glen Cannich’s Pumpkin Spiced Stout from Home Bargains for a bargain price of £1.49. Is this another meh budget beer that will prove a trick this Halloween, or a real treat?

1. Name : Pumpkin Spiced Stout
2. Brewery: Glen Cannich Brewery, ( Beauly, Scotland)
3. Hops : Not specified
4. Grain : Barley, Wheat, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger & Cloves
5. Aroma : Before I even looked at the can the nose gave off aromas of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, subtle ginger and a pleasant vanilla cutting through. After looking at the can this was bang on with all aromas identified….So far so good!
6. Appearance : Pours a black colour with a quickly dissipating one finger fluffy off white head.
7. Body : Body is quite thin but one can perhaps overlook this thanks to the pleasant aroma and flavour profile.
8. Taste: Hit of spices straight away as the beer hits the palate then you get the vanilla that is perhaps more subtle than the aroma might suggest. This has quite a pleasant flavour profile that does not overpower.
I asked the question as to whether this budget beer from Glen Cannich would prove to be a trick or a treat and, in all honesty, I have to say that it is quite a treat. Admittedly the beer will not appeal to everyone, but I personally found the spices to offer something different from the norm and this turned out to be quite an enjoyable beer.
I don’t think that this is a beer that one could session on but no doubt a can on its own might prove to be a guilty pleasure. At £1.49 a can this is quite a bargain and fair play to Glen Cannich and Home Bargains for putting this one out there. Whilst I will not be stocking the beer cupboards with this, I will certainly look to pick up a couple more cans for the autumn months.
