Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
Brown ale alert dear drinkers, one of my favourites, so sound the klaxons!
I love a brown ale and this sounds fantastic “like its namesake treat, a Brown Ale with notes of delicious custardy bread, cinnamon and maple syrup – the perfect winter warmer!” Needless to say I was pleased to wangle this one in the sample selection.
The can art is again wonderful but totally baffling to me (I’m getting old…) Our spaceman gorilla appears to be in a stately home complete with gorilla statues and peacocks, rather than a North East working mans club with old men in flat caps with their whippets.

- Name : French Toast Brown Ale
- Brewery: New Bristol Brewery, Bristol
- Hops : Not specified
- Grain : Barley, oats and wheat
- Aroma : Malty, sweet like syrup and hints of spice
- Appearance : Reddish brown, clear with a pale cream head
- Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated but with little head retention
- Taste : A sweet dry hit followed by some maltiness and touch of warming spice in the finish. Slightly sickly after taste from the sweetness though
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted
A bold interesting attempt, but one that doesn’t quite work for me. The flavour profile was unbalanced for my palate such that on a blind tasting I doubt I would have said it was a brown ale. Perhaps a little too sweet overall.
Slightly disappointed in this one as I had big expectations, I’m sure there is a great beer in there but for me it needs a bit of work. As for being a winter warmer, well it may be better served cool rather than fridge temperature, but it is too lightweight at 4.4%. Nice but there are some brilliant winter warmers out there.
