Tartarus Beers x Amity Brew Co x The Disappearing Chin – Azeban Imperial Strawberry and Vanilla Milkshake IPA (8.0% ABV)

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

As we have come to except the can art is superb as well as being slightly bizarre; this one being a like a demonic raccoon that is covered with feathers. As the can says, “scan this code to learn the tale.” Apparently in Abenaki mythology Azeban is a low-level trickster spirit in the form of a mischievous raccoon. So now I know.

Has strawberry and vanilla added in the brewing process.

  1. Name : Azeban
  2. Brewery: Tartarus Beers, Leeds, West Yorkshire
  3. Hops : Azacca, Citra, Ella and Pacific Gem
  4. Grain : Barley, wheat and oats
  5. Aroma : Surprisingly light, with slightly floral notes, citrus and Strawberry
  6. Appearance : Orange-amber, fairly opaque with floating pieces and sediment (the label states it is unfiltered and contains sediment). Produced a white head
  7. Body : Full bodied (with added bits), medium carbonated with some head retention
  8. Taste : Slightly bitter hit followed by a subtle strawberry flavour and vanilla which edges it towards bitter-sweet overall. Dry Fruity finish with a tangy aftertaste
  9. Dietary restrictions : Vegetarian. Allergens highlighted

Slightly disconcerting to see floating matter circulating through some Brownian motion like on ocean currents. Quite mesmerising like watching an aquarium! Do not let this put you off.

It is certainly an interesting beer, with plenty going on in the flavour profile. Not as sweet as I was expecting, and the strawberry flavour was neither artificial or overpowering. An imperial strength beer that manages to belie this on drinking, being not exactly easy drinking but a beer that hides its strength well. That said I doubt I would want more than one at a sitting.

A complex beer, but not really one for me.
