Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
It’s shrove Tuesday, so naturally we had to find a beer that was pancake related! Luckily John had just the tipple so lets sit down and join him as he tries this Monks Syrup Stout from Northern Monk.

- Name : Monks Syrup Stout
- Brewery: Northern Monk
- Hops : N/A
- Grain : N/A
- Aroma :Treacle toffee and sweet maple scent with a strong malt backing
- Appearance :an opaque dark black with a dark mushroom coloured head when poured.
- Body : Medium bodied, well carbonated good head retention and quite smooth in the mouth.
- Taste : Initially you get the sweet taste of Toffee caramel which is underpinned by a slightly Smokey malted undercurrent.
I can see what they were aiming for with pancake breakfast stout, and I am pleased to say that they certainly hit the brief. This is what I would call a comfort stout, its both filling, warming and delicious.
If I had one criticism its a tad too sweet, but very very nice.
John’s overall rating: 4.0/ 5.0
