Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
A can picked up from Home Bargains and a rare dark beer from Stewart Brewing. The can promises a full-bodied porter with a complex malt bill and added muscovado sugar (the label also states that maltodextrin is added too.)

- Name : Gallus Porter
- Brewery: Stewart Brewing, Loanhead, Scotland
- Hops : Not specified
- Grain : Barley and oats
- Aroma : Not strong but hints of treacle and dark chocolate
- Appearance : Very dark brown, almost black with brown head
- Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated but with no head retention
- Taste : Some malt and caramel, though not as sweet as might be expected. Dry finish with hints of savoury saltiness which linger
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted
Salted caramel not easy to pull off in a beer, the combination of salt with beer is a strange one. So, a bold effort from the brewer and to be fair it’s not a bad effort.
It’s the sort of beer that most people will find pleasant enough, and certainly represents reasonable value for money. The can suggests a complex malt bill, but this didn’t really come through on the flavour profile. It’s another inoffensive beer for the masses.
If you haven’t tried porters before then this would be a reasonable starting point.
Peter’s overall rating: 3.3/ 5.0
