Hello and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
After being massively impressed with the last beer from Virginia Beer co (Gorgeous IPA) I was delighted to discover another beer from this brewery on the shelves of my local Home Bargains store. This one is called Saving Daylight and is an intriguingly sounding citrus wheat beer that is a previous gold winner in the 2019 International Beer Cup.
Here’s hoping that this will be yet another hidden gem.
1. Name : Saving Daylight
2. Brewery: Virginia Beer (Williamsburg USA – Imported by Heathwick ltd, London)
3. Hops : Not stated
4. Grain : Barley, Wheat, Yeast & Orange peel
5. Aroma : Aroma is not particularly powerful, however the citrus notes are definitely there
6. Appearance : Pours amber in colour with a one finger fluffy white head
7. Body : Medium body with a delightfully soft mouthfeel.
8. Taste : The flavour is a contrast to the aroma in that this has a very zesty citrus fruit flavour profile. Thankfully this proves very drinkable, rather than overpowering. In addition it has to be said that this has some great characteristics of a wheat beer although the citrus flavours tone these down a little giving great balance
I will be honest in saying that Saving Daylight did not blow me away as much as the Gorgeous IPA however if this was the only one of the two Virginia Beer co beers available I would not be disappointed.
Saving Daylight is a very enjoyable, extremely refreshing beer that feels well balanced with the citrus fruits working well, never tasing artificial and never being overpowering. This is a beer that can be enjoyed at any time of year, but I would imagine would be fabulous in the warmer months.
It is fair to say that Home Bargains have pulled off a blinder by stocking these Virginia Beer co beers, so fair play to the beer buyer for the company. I am just hoping that these do not prove to be a one off as I can certainly see myself buying more.
