Welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists!
On a relatively recent visit to my parents, we frequented a Wetherspoon’s beer festival. I have to admit i had middling expectations as Hull Weatherspoon’s are not the best examples of the UK chain.
However, I saw this white stout?.. never had one of those before so naturally i had to give it a go.

- Name: White Stout
- Brewery: Nethergate Brewery
- Hops: Boadicea, and Challenger
- Grain: N/A
- Aroma : Strong scent of vanilla and cocoa with a traditional stout aroma at the back
- Appearance : Clear golden to pale colour with a tight white head
- Body : Medium bodied, well carbonated with a decent head retention.
- Taste: Smooth initial smooth malt followed by lashings of vanilla that coats my tongue finishing in a slightly chocolatey finish.
Talk about bizzarro, this looked like a traditional pale but everything else about it was definitley stout.
I know this is as advertised but getting my head around that whilst it was in my hand was truly mind-blowing. As a stout it was a little sweet but I had no major complaints about it, and just for the experience of having a “white stout” it was well worth the effort
Sam’s overall rating: 3.8/ 5.0
