Summer Sourz 2024 – Vault City X Quality Beer Drops – Singapore Sling (6.4% ABV)

Hello and Welcome to the first of our Summer Sourz segment!

Over the next few weeks we will be taking a look at some of the most interesting Sour beers we can find on the market. To kick us off we have Peter looking at this Singapore Sling Sour from non other that Vault City & Quality Beer Drops, lets see what he thinks of it.

If you follow the individual Hoptimists on social media, then you will have probably noticed that Sam and John visited Singapore in April. Of course, no trip there would have been complete without a trip to Raffles Hotel to sample the national drink, the Singapore Sling and toss peanut shells on the carpet.

Feeling a bit like the little kid presented with a tee shirt that says “Grandad went to Corfu and all I got was this lousy tee shirt” on it, I got this beer to review. I won’t sulk, I’m supposed to be a mature adult…

Recipes vary but essential ingredients for the cocktail are gin, cherry brandy, orange liqueur and lime juice. A quick glance at the can label shows juniper berries, cherry, lime, orange and pineapple, so that’s an authentic base. The question for me though was would it capture the slight sherbet zing of the cocktail.

  1. Name : Singapore Sling
  2. Brewery: Vault City Brewing, Edinburgh
  3. Hops : Not specified
  4. Grain : Malted barley
  5. Aroma : Sour but fruity cherry citrusy
  6. Appearance : Red/pink, almost opaque. Poured a white head with slight pink tinge
  7. Body : Full bodied, medium carbonation and with  some head retention
  8. Taste : A sour sherbet hit to start, red cherry comes next. Then a layer of sweet orange citrus, finishing with a touch of tart tangy lime
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted

It’s certainly sour and manages to capture the sherbet like fizziness which is no mean feat. A complex beer that reveals itself on several levels of flavour and has an alcoholic hit to it.

I guess the question becomes is it more like a cocktail than a beer? Well for me it is still recognisable as beer whilst being a very good approximation of a Singapore Sling.
