Summer Sourz 2024 – Merakai Brewing Co : Berry Berry Nice AF Fruited Sour (<0.5% ABV)

Hello and Welcome back to our Summer Sourz segment

Something a little bit different today, an alcohol-free sour beer. This one is based upon the second beer in Merakai’s Frose series and it promises to be packed full of fruit judging by the zany cartoons on the label.

A look at the ingredients shows that blueberries, strawberries and bananas are added during the brewing process along with vanilla and marshmallow. With such a shopping list I wonder how the flavours will balance out; will it indeed be Berry Berry Nice?

  1. Name : Berry Berry Nice
  2. Brewery: Merakai Brewing Co, West Sussex
  3. Hops : Lemondrop
  4. Grain : Malted Barley, oats and wheat
  5. Aroma : Faint, mainly strawberries but with a light sour edge
  6. Appearance : The colour is that of pink grapefruit juice, not quite as opaque as the juice but certainly heading that way. There were fruit bits in suspension (the label instructs to carefully roll before opening) and these bits bobbed around in a kind of Brownian motion. Produced no head
  7. Body : Medium bodied, medium carbonated with no head to retain
  8. Taste : Initially fruit, mainly blueberry, and slightly sour. Then there a creamy sweetness from the vanilla and marshmallow, which would probably be a bit sickly were it not for the sour edge. The aftertaste is fruity with strawberries
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted

A decidedly odd beer that is certainly in the worth a try category. I was expecting it to be quite sour, but it turned out a little meek and mild. This was probably due to the sweet additives, making the overall effect more like sweet and sour.

It was quite refreshing but there was a slightly sickly edge from the marshmallows which would put me off trying a second in a session.

As alcohol free beers go it is certainly interesting and unusual, one to share opinions on.

Our overall rating: 3.3/ 5.0
