Summer Sourz 2024 – North Brewing Co X North Beer Club : Spiced Sour +Plum +Blackberry +Apple (4.5% ABV)

Hello and Welcome back to our Summer Sourz segment

Here is a beer club collaboration beer with a lot going on, a sour with fruit and spices. Listed on the label we have plums, blackberries and apples for the fruit, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger for the spices, along with brown sugar and lactose. A long list of interesting and possibly conflicting flavours to balance out here. Interesting to note that there is no mention of hops on the label.

  1. Name : Spiced Sour
  2. Brewery: North Brewing Co, Leeds
  3. Hops : No mention of hops on the label
  4. Grain : Barley and oats
  5. Aroma : Sour and spicy, with apple and ginger most prominent
  6. Appearance : Dark pink/plum, opaque with fruit bits floating. Produced a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ white head
  7. Body :  Full bodied, low carbon but with no head retention
  8. Taste : Initially warm spice nutmeg and cinnamon, then a sour apples, with a touch of blackberry and ginger. Slightly tart finish and after taste, which fades quickly
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted

There is a nice sharp edge to it, without it becoming teeth jarring mouth puckeringly sour. I’m not the biggest fan of the style but this I found to be quite refreshing and would pair well with rich or barbecued food. A beer I could easily enjoy a second of in a session.

Fruit comes through nicely and the spices bring a warmth to it. The sour apple is most prominent but doesn’t drown out the other fruits. Similarly, ginger is another flavour that can overpower in a beer, but it has been used sparingly and adds to the warming sensation. A nicely balanced beer.

I drank fridge cold but would like to try cellar cool (i.e. from the garage) as the spices give it a touch of the winter warmer albeit without the heavy alcoholic punch. A nice beer I would happily drink again.
