Roosters Brewing Co – Sleep is for the Week Breakfast Stout (5.8% ABV) #BreakfastStout

Welcome back beer lovers.

I love stout but the idea of drinking it at breakfast, even as an ‘airport pint’, is a little too much too early for me. But say brunch now we are talking! Roosters don’t brew many dark beers, but I have high hopes for this one.

  2. Brewery: Roosters Brewing Co, Harrogate
  3. Hops : Not specified
  4. Grain : Malted Barley, wheat and oats
  5. Aroma : Coffee, chocolate and a touch of sweet caramel
  6. Appearance : Black with a head the colour of milky coffee
  7. Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated but with little head retention
  8. Taste : Initial coffee flavours are tempered by the lactose, making it more of a milky coffee than a bitter one. Roasted malts but without much smokiness. Then a touch of chocolate and just a little sweetness. Nice smooth finish with a nice rich malty aftertaste
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted. Not suitable for vegans due to lactose

Quite subtle with the flavours but perfectly balanced with nothing overwhelming. There is plenty of coffee flavour, but it is not harsh or bitter as is the case with the chocolate. The lactose brings a creaminess which keeps everything in check and produces a lovely smooth finish.

It is sweet, as would be expected, but not tooth rotting so, instead impairing a smooth caramel flavour.

Some might find it a little understated, but I loved it and with an ABV of 5.8% it is not a lightweight.

Our overall rating: 3.8/ 5.0
